Body mass index (BMI), is a measuring unit for human body fat based on a person’s weight and height. It is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. You can calculate your BMI from knowing your height and weight. One important fact to know is that children or pregnant women cannot calculate their BMI because they are still growing and their BMI will change. Online BMI calculators are also not the best way to calculate your BMI since they may not be accurate. The most successful way to calculate your BMI is to go see your doctor. Did you know that the higher your BMI is, the higher your risk for diseases. Some diseases you can have because of a high BMI are heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems and certain types of cancers…
A healthy eating plan includes many fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy products. It also includes lean meats such as: poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. A healthy diet also includes foods low in saturated fats, low trans fat, cholesterol, salt and extra sugars. It is also very important to control portion sizes of your meals because it is important to have equal portions of each food category. Of course, it is okay to have a little snack once in a while, eat some ”junk -food” or go out for dinner because it won’t change your typical diet too much. Having a healthy eating plan can prevent from having obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and many other diseases.
It is also important to have a healthy lifestyle to have a healthy living. It is important to have many social contacts/friends to create a supportive environment of people who care about you and that you trust. Having many social contacts/friends will keep your mind focused on positive thoughts, instead of being by yourself and thinking negative thoughts. Physical activity is also important because it keeps your body strong, it reduces your stress and improves your energy by a lot. Physical activity also reduces your chance of having obesity and other illnesses. Choosing not to smoke will also be a huge affect on your lifestyle. Not smoking also prevents many types of diseases, such as: heart disease, lung cancer etc…
